The study of philosophy involves forming one's answers to such questions but also seeking to understand how people have answered such questions in the past.
In determining Haseya’s breeding program, we diligently researched the reasoning and benefits of back-to-back breeding versus skipping heats. There are many canine breeders worldwide, of course, and there is no consensus on what everyone believes to be true about breeding back-to-back, skipping and how many litters a bitch should have during her lifetime.
Many canine reproduction specialists, such as Dr. Hutchison, have long concluded that once a female is fertile, she should be bred at every heat until she is done.
During an AKC Dog Breeding Symposium, Dr. Claudia Orlandi, Ph.D. (AKC's breeder of the year and author of The ABCs of Dog Breeding), disclosed that there had been scientific studies to show that it is detrimental for bitches to skip heat cycles. Dr. Orlandi shared that once you have begun to mate a bitch you should not skip any heat cycles until she is finished breeding. A bitch is said to be "finished" breeding when her litter size has drastically decreased.
Part of the reasoning that skipping heat cycles is harmful comes from the fact that breeding a healthy bitch back-to-back can lessen the chances of the female experiencing pyometra, infections and false pregnancies.
A common misconception is that an ethical breeder should have their bitch skip at least one heat cycle between two pregnancies. In this way, the dog breeder lets her recover from the first pregnancy and may also decide to show the bitch between cycles.
After exhausting our research and donning our philosopher’s hats, we have realized that breeding our girls after age 5 is not something we would feel comfortable doing.
With the utmost respect and love for our breeding program, Haseya Poodles has decided that we will adopt the recommendations of reproductive experts and will breed back-to-back while our girls are young. We feel this is in the dog's best interest for her health and quality of life.
